Film posters produced have a purpose of promoting the movie; the promoting is done by graphical editing to portray a message by just by looking at the poster. Posters are a very good way to enhance films awareness. Film posters can be distributed through advertising on large Billboards, Train Stations, Buses, Magazine, Leaflets and other form of advertising.

A conventional poster will include images which relate to the Film and what genre the film falls under. It has to contain its styling to not mislead the person which has come across this poster. The poster has to be convincing and make a person want to watch it in the cinemas or on DVD.

On my analysis of the Poster for ‘Halloween’ the movie, I had found key structures which have been demonstrated on the poster. There are consistencies which can be found in relation to the actual film. During the film it contains many of the colours such as Burned Orange/yellow, Brown and Black. The uses of these colours connotates a message, for instance the Burned Orange in the poster will connotate to the film name ‘Halloween’ and during Halloween Pumpkins are a symbol for the festive. The Burned Orange/Yellow also connotates fire, burning and also disaster, the colour is a very vibrant eye catching colour which has great depths to it. The colour Black is used in the poster connotates fear, mysterious, spookiness and these are just some the words that could describe the black used in the poster as it is a neutral colour with not much meaning to it. The brown will gesture to a burning off of the orange and will fade into a brownness effect, the brown colour will suggest again something creepy is about to happen, it is a very blunt colour which is used effectively besides it does not look like a colour with great aspiration to it. The Graphical designers have been very diligent in terms of the use of colours; the colours work well together and will stand out amongst other posters. The contrast and saturations of the image has been lowered to give that darkness effect to help bring that sense of tension and fear between the poster and the viewer. The darkness will uplift the excitement and thrill hopefully before the audience have watched the film.

The Film Halloween is about a boy called Michael Myers who 16 years ago who was a brutal murder which killed his mum, step father, elder sister and boyfriend. He has been admitted to a mental institution but later fled to return back to his hometown of Haddonfield in search of his beloved baby sister Laurie Strode.

The poster has a body shot of Michael Myers facing his back to the cameras with minimal detail of a neighbourhood which can be said as his return to his hometown. The poster has clearly pitched why he is returning back to his neighbourhood with a large section of the poster featuring his famous mask which he uses to commit his brutal murders. The poster has been designed in such a way that Michael Myers is also facing towards the mask, in conjunction to his neighbourhood within a low key lighting. This tells a hidden message and will get audiences thinking what can this possibly have relation with the rest of the film and what can expect to see. The composition of the poster is within great detail and it sticks to the type of film by reminding audience it is a horror/thriller film by having the knife Michael Myers right hand and on the opposite hand the mask he had used to kill the family members.

The poster as mentioned has a large overhauling image which has taken up majority of the poster is the mask Michael Myers uses to kill the family members, it is the main focal point which would attract a audiences eye straight away, it is a mask which is looking back at the person which may be viewing the poster. The Graphics artist has played it smart because the image of the mask is not pleasant and is very daunting to see and to be able to have a mask in such state look back at you can only give one message and that is this film is all horrific and scary.

Within the mask contains images of people which have been victims under the knife of Michael Myers. Some of the images which are within the mask over-laid is a lady which is crying in agony also the Cross symbol which relates to a burial of the victim. The graphics designer has used the mask as a good technique to show what acts have been carried out whilst the mask was on the face during the killings. It is a visual enrichment of what the audience can expect to see before watching the actual movie.

The typography for the film Halloween contains a sub heading to the upper end of the poster which reads a message “EVIL HAS A DESTINY”, what this message connotates is that the evil has a destiny just as same as a person which is not evil regardless if they are not a brutal murderer. This message conveys the so-called sympathy the audience should of had for Michael Myers which they do not due to him being the villain in the film. The styling of the text is in a white filled font which is in small size to just convey its simple message. Its purpose is to get the reader thinking within a few couple of words.

The poster also features a sentence which represents the director of the film. The sentence above the title of the film reads ‘A Rob Zombie Film’, Rob Zombie or otherwise known as Robert Bartleh Cummings is a musician, film producer, screenwriter and a film director. The reason to display the heading as ‘A Rob Zombie Film’ is due to Rob directing other horror/thriller movies which have been a big hit and this has established Rob’s successful career.

The title of the Film is in uppercase so it stands out nice and clearly, the font used is in a standard bold with not too large sized font. The colour of the font is in a burned orange to connotate the fear of murder and pain of fire. The placement of the title is towards the far bottom end of the poster, this is due to the graphics designer send out a message of the film with images which in-corporate for the message.

To the conclusion I feel the poster for Halloween has clearly shown what the films all about with still images and has expressed this with terms of colour usage and lighting. The positioning of the layouts has been distributed evenly in the poster with all the images given a hierarchical structure to it. The conventional attributes are all within the poster; it holds all the stakes to be recognised as a horror/Thriller film.
