Textual Analysis: Movie Poster. (Kerry Treacy)

Film Poster Textual Analysis: Freddy VS. Jason
• Freddy VS. Jason is a 2003 American slasher film directed by Ronny Yu. The film is a crossover film production between A Nightmare on Elm Street and the Friday the 13th films.

• Film posters are a form of graphical communication that are intended to persuade a specific audience to take action and view the film production. Film poster advertising also serve to message for audiences an idea in attempt to convince them to take a certain action.

• From analysis of the graphic design in this poster, there are three particular colours which dominate the poster. The use of black, red and silver are used to connote a horror theme synopsis. It is highly stereotypically for designers to use the mixed of these particular colours as black, red and silver are all in association with death. The predominate colour is black, the black is used to emphasize the characters on the poster and their non-verbal communication. The colours highlight the rivalry between both the characters on the poster, this is also enhanced by the strong use of low key lighting, and both these elements link the plot of the film together and enforce the audience to logically think what will happen in the film. The costume and the NVC in the poster denotate the stereotypical representation of the characters roles in the film. On the left hand side of the poster is the villain Freddy Kreuger audience members who have previously watched A nightmare on Elm street will relate to him as the villain from the 1980s movie. There is a typical stereotypical convention here, Freddy is portrayed as a disfigured, mutilating killer, this is seen by his disfiguration of burnt skin and costume, and his razor hands. On the right hand side of the page is the villain Jason X audience members who have previously watched Jason x for example will relate to him as the masked killer. In regards to the composition of the poster, the composition follows a typical horror convention. Due to the fact that the film is primarily based upon the two characters in the poster it is clearly represented to the audience that they are rivals. This is visually represented by the two characters facing each other at eye line perspective view.

• The main props used in the poster are the weapons that each character is holding. The weapons are symbolic to the characters role in the film and are a visual representation of the films genre. The graphic design has intentionally been designed to make the props stand out so they have an important status that enforces the idea of a horror synopsis of the film. The props have been compositionally positioned so that they clash with each other connoting that there is going to be violence between the two character on the poster, the positioning of the props creates a status boundary between the two rivals. The props have been intentionally signalled out by the use of high key lighting signifying there importance to the films plot.

• In analysis of the typography used on this film poster, the graphic designer has chosen an stereotypical yet effective style of font. The composition of the film’s title is very effective as it is the main focal point which the human eye is attracted to. The film’s title has been positioned in the up centre of the poster in the midpoint section of the two opposing characters. Beneath the poster is the release date of the film and in smaller typography in a white style of font is the website, production and actors information. One thing I’ve noticed about this poster is there is no slogan. A slogan is stereotypically used on horror theme as a form of persuasive language that will interest a targeted set of audience members to view the film. However here no slogan is used, instead I think the graphic designer has used visual images as a way to persuade the audience to want to view the film. Due to the fact that both characters are profoundly known is enough for audiences to want to watch the film.

• In conclusion I think the film poster accomplishes the main purpose of persuasion for the intended audience to want to view the film. It follows common stereotypical conventions and elements of horror movie type posters.
