Textual Analysis of a Movie Poster (Fergie Nzita)

The Horror poster I have decided to analysis is SAW V which is the fifth instalment of the SAW movies.

The Film Title: Saw V (5th Instalment)
Year of Release: 2008
Director: David Hackl, previously served a production designer for Saw 2,3 and 4
Producers: Gregg Hoffman, Mark Burg, Oren Koules, James Wan, Leigh Whannell

Films Origin: The fifth instalment of the original Saw movie first released in early 2004
Synopsis (http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/415847/why_the_saw_movie_series_scares_the.html): In the Saw movies, Jigsaw is a character whose only purpose is to act as a vigilante against people that he believes is not morally concrete. He has taken it upon himself to act as the judge, jury, and executioner of the people that he decides to torment. This, essentially, sets up for another fear that many of us keep tucked away in the dark recesses of our minds.

Nearly all posters for the Saw Franchise are timed to be released around Halloween. This creates suspense for readers. Certain characteristics in Saw movie posters remain such as the popular roman numeric trademark so the viewer knows which instalment is next. The photography in Saw posters says very little to the viewer which creates a substantial amount of suspense and an eager to watch the film. All SAW movie posters have managed to portray a sense of suffering played by the victim.
Lionsgate is an independent film and television distribution company and is the company that distributes SAW movie’s. It boasts the SAW franchise as one of their highest grossing films. Amazingly, the first SAW movie’s production budget was only $1.1 million and successfully grossed over $103 million.
As seen in this movie poster, the people at Saw decided to remain subtle but scary in their latest creation. The Image is of a man who looks extremely uncomfortable. The man we can identify through his broad shoulders, veins on his arms, the stereotypical man watch, his shirt and his big hands.
The image is a close up image and we can identify this man is married because of his wedding ring. This can be portrayed as though the man is in fact an everyday man, wife and maybe children in his life. Because it is the fifth instalment of the Saw Franchise, the viewer already is aware that “Jigsaw” (The character who tortures people he believes do not deserve to live) has captured this man. The man is being portrayed in the poster as a family man so what could he have possibly done wrong?
For those who have not watched any SAW films would also be asking why this man is in such a dreadful position.
The man’s face is not visible. This is because the image is made to look as thought the man is constantly moving uncontrollably. This technique is very smart as it manages to create a sense of movement inside a still image. The colours used are dark with low key lighting. With this you have the title of the film SAW V. The title is in red, which is a very popular colour convention that’s stands out thoroughly. The font is San Serif with the “V” in serif to keep to the roman numeric trademark. The font looks like a type of bloody effect which looks gory and ghoulish which sees it go well with the dark background creating a spooky and scary effect.
The main prop used in the image is the glass case fixed onto the man’s head. The case has got hard metal surrounding it. This lets the reader know how tights and secure the glass case is. It is also a way of letting the reader know there is not really a way out and the caption of the man’s struggle supports that.
The man seems to be in what looks like a filthy location. I can identify this through the dirt on the background wall which could also be dried blood however because of the dark colour theme; it is hard to tell which one it may be.
