Textual Analysis of a Movie Poster (Olympia Amoo)

Film Poster Textual Analysis: The Last Exorcism.
• The Last Exorcism is a 2010 film written by Huck Bukto and Andrew Gurland. It is about a Reverend who is performing his last exorcism as a part of a documentary and he exposes the fraud during his time in the ministry.

• Film posters are there to advertise the represent the film even before it is released. The film poster is there to promote the film, the whole film has to be shown through the poster; this allows people to want to watch the film before they see the trailer.

• The film poster consists of three colours, these are white, black and red. White and black dominate this poster; red is not used a lot, just for the small font and the bottom, even though it is not used a lot, it stands out because white and black are mutual colours and red is such a bright colour. The use of these colours make the poster stand out more than it would it other colours were used because it makes you question 'why is it black and white'. The use of the colour black adds to the darkness of the film. A shadow is used on the poster to create a scary look; this adds to the darkness of the storyline.

The girl on the poster is dressed in a 'white nightie' and what looks like blood on it, but it is black, so that adds suspense because it makes the audience wonder what happened to her. The position that the young girl is in corresponds with the title of the film, because it is called ' the last exorcism and she is in a position that a possessed person is likely to be in. From the previous exorcist film the traits for a poster are the same, the 'possessed' person is always demented.
• The only prop used on this poster is a crucifix and it is very small, you can barely notice it. This poster is the type that you need to look at it properly to be able to get what is happening. It has very little on it so you have to make your own personal interpretative of it.

•The typography used on this film poster is a stereotypical font. The font is black, and uses different sizes. The last Exorcism is written The Last Exorcism, according to importance. This makes the word exorcism stand out. The font size mainly use is relevantly small and the most important words are bold and bigger. An example of this is 'coming soon'; because they don't want to give away when the film is coming out but they want the audience to know that it is coming soon.

• In conclusion I think that the poster is done very well and promotes the film well. The poster is simple but also very effective. It gets the audience interested without exposing too much about the film.
